Meningitis: the danger signs to never ignore

Meningitis is an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord. It can become serious within hours, so knowing the signs and acting fast is vital. Parts of northern Cameroon lie in Africa's "meningitis belt," but it can happen anywhere.

In older children and adults, watch for: a bad headache with fever, a stiff neck (hard to bend the chin to the chest), confusion or drowsiness, dislike of bright light, and vomiting. A rash that does not fade when you press a glass against it is a danger sign.

In babies, watch for: high fever, a bulging soft spot on the head, a stiff or floppy body, refusing to feed, and a high-pitched or constant cry.

Do not wait to see if it passes. Meningitis is a medical emergency, go to the nearest hospital straight away. Early treatment saves lives and prevents lasting harm such as deafness or brain damage.

Some kinds of meningitis can be prevented by vaccines, including those given in the national immunisation schedule. Keep your children's vaccinations up to date.
