Diabetes means too much sugar in the blood. In Cameroon most people who have it do not know yet.
Warning signs: passing a lot of urine, being very thirsty, losing weight, feeling tired, and slow-healing wounds.
A simple finger-prick test tells you your sugar level. Ask for it at any health centre.
Left alone, high sugar damages the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart, and can cause a dangerous emergency.
You can lower your risk: eat less sugar and refined starch, move your body daily, and keep a healthy weight.
