Vaccination

Why vaccines are safe, and how we know

People ask this honestly and deserve an honest answer rather than reassurance. A vaccine is tested in stages on thousands of people before approval, watched after approval across millions, and it can be withdrawn. The evidence behind that is public.

What a vaccine actually does

It shows the immune system a harmless piece or a weakened form of a germ, so the body learns to recognise it. When the real germ arrives, the defence is already built. The vaccine does not give you the disease, and it leaves nothing permanent behind.

How safety is established

  • Laboratory work, then a small first trial, then a larger one, then a trial in thousands of people comparing vaccinated and unvaccinated groups.
  • Regulators in several countries review the raw data independently before approval.
  • After approval, reporting systems in many countries watch for rare effects that only appear across millions of doses.
  • Vaccines and batches have been withdrawn when those systems found a problem. That is the system working, and it is the reason to trust it.

The common worries, answered plainly

  • Autism. The 1998 paper that started this was found to be fraudulent, was retracted, and its author lost his licence. Studies covering millions of children since have found no link.
  • "Too many at once." A child meets thousands of germs a day. The few proteins in a vaccine schedule are a rounding error against that, and giving them together is what makes completion possible.
  • Ingredients. The amounts are tiny and are listed publicly. There is more aluminium in a day of breast milk than in a vaccine dose.
  • "My child is healthy." That is the point. Vaccines are given before exposure; afterwards is too late.
  • Fertility. No vaccine in the childhood schedule affects fertility. This rumour has circulated in Cameroon specifically and has no evidence behind it.

What is honestly true about risk

Vaccines have real side effects. Nearly all are a sore arm, a mild fever or a day of fussiness. Serious reactions happen, and are rare enough to be measured in cases per million doses. The diseases they prevent, measles, tetanus, whooping cough, meningitis, are far more common and far more dangerous than that. That comparison is the whole argument, and it holds.

Where to take a question

Ask the nurse at the health centre and ask for the specific answer, not a general reassurance. A good question deserves a real answer, and a parent who asks it is doing their job.

  • Trials and surveillanceWHO vaccine safety: phased clinical trials, independent regulatory review and post-licensure surveillance.
  • The autism claimThe 1998 Lancet paper was retracted in 2010; subsequent population studies covering millions of children found no association.
