Polio drops: why the campaigns keep coming

Polio paralyses, permanently, and there is no cure. Everything against it is prevention. The repeated door-to-door campaigns exist because the virus only needs one unprotected child to come back to a region that had cleared it.

Why a child needs drops again after the routine doses

The routine schedule builds individual protection. The campaigns build community protection: when nearly every child in a quarter is given drops within a few days, the virus cannot find anyone to move through, and it dies out locally. That only works if it is done to almost all the children at once, which is why the team comes to the door rather than waiting for you.

The extra doses are not harmful

This is the commonest worry and the answer is straightforward: extra doses of oral polio vaccine do not harm a child. They add protection. A child who received drops last month should receive them again this month if a campaign is running.

What polio does

  • Most infections cause nothing, or a mild fever. That is what makes it spread unseen.
  • In a small share, the virus attacks the nerves controlling muscle, and a limb becomes weak or limp, usually within days.
  • The paralysis is usually permanent. There is no treatment that reverses it.
  • When breathing muscles are affected, it kills.

Report this immediately

  • Sudden weakness or floppiness of a limb in a child under 15, especially after a fever.
  • Any sudden paralysis in any person, at any age.

Any sudden floppy weakness in a child is investigated as possible polio, whatever the eventual cause. Reporting it early is how an outbreak is caught before it spreads. Take the child to a health facility the same day and say what you saw.

Alongside the drops

Polio spreads through faeces reaching the mouth, the same route as cholera and typhoid. Latrines, safe water and soap are part of stopping it, not a separate subject.
