Tension & sucre

Bringing blood pressure down

Blood pressure responds to a handful of changes, and salt is the biggest one in Cameroon. Habits and tablets are not alternatives: habits make the tablets work at a lower dose, and nothing replaces the tablets once a clinician has prescribed them.

Salt, first

Most salt here does not come from the salt shaker. It comes from bouillon cubes, seasoning powders, dried and smoked fish, and tinned food. Halving the cubes in a pot does more than anything else on this page. Build flavour with onion, garlic, ginger, pepper, njansang, country onion, basil and lemon instead. Taste before adding, not while adding.

The rest of what works

  • Move most days. Thirty minutes of walking, five days a week, lowers pressure measurably. It does not need a gym.
  • Lose some weight if you are carrying extra. Even a few kilos shifts the numbers.
  • Cut back on alcohol. Heavy drinking raises pressure directly.
  • Stop smoking. Every cigarette spikes pressure, and it multiplies the stroke risk on top.
  • Eat more fruit and vegetables, and more beans, plantain, potatoes and greens. Potassium in food helps counter the salt.
  • Sleep. Persistent short sleep raises pressure.

About the tablets

  • They work while you take them. Pressure goes back up when you stop, and often higher.
  • Feeling well is the treatment working, not a reason to stop. This is the commonest reason people end up with a stroke.
  • Take them at the same time each day. Tie it to something you already do.
  • Side effects are usually fixable by changing the drug. Tell the clinician rather than stopping on your own.
  • If you cannot afford the prescription, say so. There is often a cheaper equivalent.

What does not lower blood pressure

  • Herbal preparations sold for "blood pressure". None are proven, some interact with real medicines, and some raise pressure.
  • Taking the tablet only on days you feel unwell.
  • Replacing table salt with a low-sodium substitute while the cubes stay the same.
  • Stopping treatment because a single reading was normal.

Go to a facility today if

  • A reading of 180 over 110 or higher.
  • Chest pain, severe breathlessness, or sudden swelling of the legs.
  • Sudden weakness on one side, a drooping face, or trouble speaking.
  • A severe headache with vomiting or confusion, or sudden loss of vision.

D’où viennent ces informations

  • Lifestyle effectWHO: reduced sodium intake, physical activity, weight reduction and limiting alcohol lower blood pressure.
  • SodiumWHO recommends less than 5 g of salt per day; in much of Africa bouillon cubes and seasoning powders are a major source.
